Such thoughts, they make me weep and smile and sigh. I wish you had taught me when I was stumbling through school.

How to care? I don't know that there's a more important question to ask of ourselves or others right now, at this point in history, with so much widespread disease and dis-ease. It's a daily refrain. How to care for yourself, how to care for others? Walking helps. So much. It's so cold I need a toque and a neck gaiter and a hoodie and a parka and snow pants to walk the forest trails. It's almost insulation against the world at large. I'm ashamed to say it, but I'm always happiest if I don't see another person and often this is the case. I get to be the first to see vole tunnels and deer, moose, fox, rabbit, mouse, and wolf tracks on fresh snow. What a gift! I listen to podcasts and music. Today I heard Hrishikesh Hirway read Yeats [https://interestingpeoplereadingpoetry.com/2021/12/21/musician-hrishikesh-hirway-reads-william-butler-yeats/] and the thoughts about living in peace in the bee-loud glade forever with nine bean rows and a beehive to my name sounded like pure heaven. How to care. How to care? Small sips of beauty like animal tracks and birch trees and leaden grey winter skies and meditations on poetry do help. The question is one where the needs and the answers change daily. Maybe care is in the sheer force of will it takes to keep asking.
